FAQT Meeting at USF: Building a Statewide Alliance from Individual Excellence

Researchers and leaders of nine Florida universities met with representatives from state government and industry to discuss quantum technology and its role in Florida’s economy in the coming years. Researchers showcased the strength and breadth of quantum research across the participating universities, from basic science to quantum sensors. Attendees of the event, held at the University of South Florida on August 18th, expressed the desire that Florida build on its existing strengths to become a national hub for quantum technology.

The team from the University of Florida—led by ECE Chair Mark Tehranipoor, ECE Associate Chair John Shea, and ECE Wally Rhines Endowed Professor in Quantum Engineering Philip Feng—shared a vision for the Florida Alliance for Quantum Technology that would leverage Florida’s unique strengths to transform Florida into a powerhouse of quantum technology. With proper support, FAQT will contribute to national defense and industry innovation through cutting-edge research and development, commercial innovation, entrepreneurship, talent development and recruitment, and attracting new quantum industry to Florida.

Attendees of the meeting discussed the urgency in acting now, as other states in the US have been investing heavily on quantum. However, Florida’s existing strengths across 14 major universities means that it is positioned to act quickly.

The State of Florida’s commitment to quantum leadership was clearly demonstrated by the diverse government representation at the meeting, including Secretary of Commerce Alex Kelly, as well as representatives from the State University System Board of Governers and the Department of Education.

The meeting concluded with the university representatives developing an outline of a joint framework that will allow state funding for quantum research, talent development, and entrepreneurial activities to have an immediate and transformative impact through the combined support and expertise of the FAQT universities.
